Jair Bolsonaro detained after being considered a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
