Roughly fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the incident left him without words and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
